Bug

"You ever smelled one of these?" he asked, holding the box elder bug gently between thumb and finger, upside down and wiggling its legs.  He took a snort just to be sure of himself.  "Pine."
Now usually this won't go far, most assume it's some type of gag, one ending in a bug in the nose or smashed into the face by a well played slap and this is most likely why so few had ever bothered to smell the bug.
He set it down on the railing, dazed and unmoving.  He did what he could to assume a neutral position as his friend cautiously took hold of it in a similar, if less refined, manner.
Never taking his eyes from him he sniffed, squinted and said, "Weird."
     "I told you I wasn't crazy."
"I never said you were crazy," laughing.
"No, but you did," and from what could be seen he suddenly lunged a solid punch into the air next to the head of his friend for absolutely no reason, but in reality he had actually punched his friend's doppelganger from Dimension 7, standing next to him, nearly identical in all ways but yet somehow always more annoying, and at this juncture in time and setting having one crucial difference:  no bug.
     So no sniff.
